INCENTIVE IDEAS:

The following are incentive and support ideas that Indiana Core 40 Scholars pilot schools have used during their implementation of the initiative. Please feel free to use any of these ideas in your own community. And, please email Indiana Core 40 Scholars with any new suggestions you might have so that we can share with communities across the state.

Incentives:

• Using local grant scholarship money to provide financial incentives for receiving a Core 40 or Academic Honors diploma
• Tier Recognition program at the end of the school year for students staying on track to complete the Indiana Core 40 Scholars course of study (Examples: ice cream socials for 9th graders, pizza party for 10th graders, a cookout for 11th graders and the community-wide celebration for 12th graders)
• Annual Indiana Core 40 Scholars breakfast Graduation recognition and other special recognition awards
• Certificates for 8th & 9th graders that have a 4-year course to complete the Indiana core 40 Scholars course of study
• Core 40 decals/stickers on diplomas
• Pins or medallions to be worn at graduation by Indiana Core 40 Scholars

Support:

• Local business persons serving as mentors for individuals or small groups of Core 40 Scholars

• A poll by the Horatio Alger Association showed that nearly three-quarters of the teenagers surveyed are in favor of requiring four years of math and science in high school and that more than eight in 10 support exit exam requirements. These findings reinforce results of Achieve's poll of recent high school graduates, the majority of whom said that they would have worked harder if their schools had demanded more of them.
